「GOOD-BYE」の監督James Lee氏は1973年マレーシア生まれの華人。グラフィックデザイナーとして数社に勤務の後、演劇界へ。俳優や舞台監督を経て、デジタルフィルムによる映画製作に乗り出す。2002年製作の國語映画「Room
to Let」は多くの映画祭で上映された。自らのプロダクション「Doghouse73」を設立、低予算での映画作りを行っている。
Lee氏のご厚意により、Director notesとその和訳を以下に記載する。
GOOD-BYE
Synopsis
Yoong in her late 20s working in a routine office enviroinment. Like most
urbanites, caught in the rat race, she spent most of her time focusing
on her work. Still trying to cope on the breakup with her live-in boyfriend
Wei, on the 1st April 2003 she learns the death of Hong Kong pop legend
Leslie Cheung’s suicide. Yoong begins to rediscover little memories and
starts to look for her old Leslie Cheung’s CD which she listens during
high school.
Director’s statement
Inspired and triggered by an event earlier this year (1st April 2003),
the suicide of canto-pop legend Leslie Cheung. Received the news by SMS
from a friend, I thought it was a joke. After midnight, the news was confirmed
to be true. It suddenly brings back memories of my secondary school days,
the friends, the girls, the music.I used to listens to his songs. But since
coming out to society and joining the rat race, I gradually doesn’t listen
to his songs nor even pop music. Guess it’s part of growing mature, or
maybe once faced with the realities of society the songs doesn’t meant
anything anymore. But that night, 1st of April 2003, it gave me back memories
and feeling I once lost, those good times & bad times when we used
to listens to his songs for the melody and escapism. Now maybe I have found
another form of escapism, films.
And so the next day I start to write and create a screenplay for the feeling
I’ve got back for a moment regarding Leslie’s death. Instead of basing
the feelings directly from me, I transfer the whole feeling to the character
“Yoong” which is played by Tioh Bee Yong which I saw her performed earlier
in a stage play. The role she play in the play is an entirely totally different
role in GOOD-BYE. The opposite. Somehow I felt for an actor to be able
to handle the role in the play, it won’t be a problem if she’s ask to
play the lead in GOOD-BYE. Finishes the script in a few days time, just
only scenes with very brief information and no dialouges as I was embarking
onto the experimenting of improvisation (putting the actors real life/history
into the characters). We reherse all the scenes before shoot to lock the
dialogues which I’ll note & write it down. Surprisingly Yong has put
a lot of her own history and incorporate into the character as she claims
some bits and parts are quite similar to her real life. It was a coincidence.
And the final product is a semi-realistic-docu drama, even though the whole
film is fiction, but I’m very satisfied, for it managed to caputred &
potrayed the mood of separation, growing maturity, memories and good old
friends.

今年前半の出来事、2003年4月1日の伝説的広東系アイドル歌手張國榮の自死にうたれ、つき動かされて撮った。友人から携帯にメールが入ったときは冗談だと思った。夜中をすぎてから、本当だとわかった。そうしたら、高校時代の思い出が急激に押し寄せてきた。あの頃の友達、女の子たち、音楽。彼の歌は昔よく聴いていた。だが社会に出て必死の競争に駆り立てられるようになると、だんだんと彼のどころか流行歌自体を聴かなくなっていった。大人になるとはそういうことでもあるだろうし、あるいはいったん社会の現実にさらされてしまえば音楽などどうでもよくなってしまうのかもしれない。でもその夜、2003年4月1日、彼の死の知らせが失われた記憶と感情を呼び起こした。調子のいいときも悪いときも彼の歌の旋律に聴き入り、現実逃避をはかっていた頃の気持ちを。今また別の逃避手段を見つけている、多分それが映画作り。
翌日から脚本製作に着手した。彼の死を知った瞬間によみがえった感情を表そうと思った。自分自身の感情を直接下敷きにするのはやめて、Yoongという人物にいったんすべて移し替えることにした。演じるのはTioh
Bee Yong、以前舞台で観たことがあった役者。そのときは「GOOD-BYE」とはてんでまったく違う役を演じていた。まさに正反対。だが彼女ならうまくやれると感じたので、主役に起用するのに抵抗はなかった。数日間で脚本を書き終えた。ごくわずかな情報が示されるだけで会話はなし、そういう場面のみ。即興性を実験すること、つまり役者自身の本当の姿を役に体現させるということをずっとやってきたから。撮影前に全シーンのリハーサルを行い、台詞を決定し、そこではじめて書き留めるというわけだ。Yongが彼女そのものを投入し、役になりきったのには驚いた。実際彼女は、Yoongがところどころ本当の自分とひどく似たところがあると言っていた。偶然にすぎないが。できあがったのは、全てフィクションであるにもかかわらず、実話に近いようなドキュメンタリードラマといったものだ。離れていくこと、成長すること、忘れないでいること、懐かしい友人たちのこと。なんとかそういう気分を捉え、写し撮ることができてよかったと思っている。
